Are you willing to relocate for a job?

By anthony balderrama

Last week The Chicago Tribune ran an article on job seekers who felt geography was the hindering their job searches. According to the article, “In the first quarter of this year, 14.3 percent [of job seekers who found work] relocated for a job; in the second quarter of 2008, 11.4 percent moved for work.”
We’ve mentioned before the roles of your city and state in job hunting. Location, location, location–it’s not just important to real estate agents. It’s also not an easy move to make, either. If relocation only involved getting a job, people would be hopping across the country without a second thought. However, people tend to have–you know–lives! Family, children, mortgages, schools, sentimental attachments. These factor in to why we live were we live.
Unfortunately, part of life is paying bills and making ends meet. That usually relies on a job. And that brings us back to the question: Would you relocate for a job? Your answer could depend on your occupation. I know that several professors I had in college went where the jobs were. Tenured professors don’t leave and not every school offeres the same courses, so picking a city and assuming you’ll find a job isn’t usually possible.
Therefore one professor who earned his Ph.D. in Victorian literature, which meant only a certain number of relevant openings were available each year. Many medical professionals also follow suit and go where their specialization is needed. If you’re in sales, you could have an easier time finding opportunities throughout the country. However, as the article said, the amount of job seekers outnumbers the amount of job openings. So anyone looking for a job has to address the possibility of relocation. Is it an absolute no for you? Is it a maybe? Is it something you’ll likely do?
To help you make your decision, here are some questions to ask yourself:
1. What is the entire cost of the move itself?
2. What is the comprehensive cost of living adjustment?
3. When is your last day on the old job and your first day of the new one?
4. What are your career opportunities in this new city?
5. What does saying “no” to the relocation mean for your career?
6. If you’re switching employers, what are your career opportunities at the new company?
7. Do you want to move?
There are no rights or wrongs to these answers. You have to decide for yourself what you’re willing to sacrifice and what risks you want to take. Just remember that the decision to relocate is more involved than just changing your address at the Post Office.
If you’ve moved for a job, let us know if it worked out for you. Did you get the job before you moved or did you just move and take a chance?

Top 10 Unbelievable Interview Blunders

What is the most unusual thing a candidate has done in a job interview this year? Fall asleep? Disappear? Bring his or her mom? CareerBuilder.com released its annual survey of the most outrageous interview mistakes candidates have made, according to over 3,000 hiring managers and HR professionals nationwide. This year's Top 10 List includes:

1. Candidate answered cell phone and asked the interviewer to leave her own office because it was a "private" conversation.
2. Candidate told the interviewer he wouldn't be able to stay with the job long because he thought he might get an inheritance if his uncle died - and his uncle "wasn't looking too good."
3. Candidate asked the interviewer for a ride home after the interview.
4. Candidate smelled his armpits on the way to the interview room.
5. Candidate said she could not provide a writing sample because all of her writing had been for the CIA and it was "classified."
6. Candidate told the interviewer he was fired for beating up his last boss.
7. When applicant was offered food before the interview he declined, saying that he didn't want to line his stomach with grease before going out drinking.
8. A candidate for an accounting position said she was a "people person," not a "numbers person."
9. Candidate flushed the toilet while talking to the interviewer during a phone interview.
10. Candidate took out a hair brush and brushed her hair mid-interview.

employers were also asked about the most common and detrimental mistakes candidates have made during an interview.

In addition to the most unusual blunders, employers were also asked about the most common and detrimental mistakes candidates have made during an interview. More than half (51 percent) of hiring managers cited dressing inappropriately as the most damaging mistake a candidate can make in an interview. Speaking negatively about a current or previous employer came in second at 49 percent, and appearing disinterested ranked third at 48 percent. Other mistakes included appearing arrogant (44 percent), not providing specific answers (30 percent), and not asking good questions (29 percent).

The above blunders may be extreme examples of job seeker missteps, but hiring managers also make similar mistakes that drive away excellent candidates.

Interviews give both the employer and interviewee insight into what it will be like to work together. The above blunders may be extreme examples of job seeker missteps, but hiring managers also make similar mistakes that drive away excellent candidates. Remember that employed candidates are not desperate for a job and are often looking for a better opportunity than their current employer is providing.

Active job seekers often interview with multiple companies in the same week. Therefore, it is just as important for the people giving the interviews to be prepared as it is for the candidate. Familiarize yourself with a candidate's resume and background, be prepared with a list of targeted and general questions, and be strategic in the interview style that you choose.

5 Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

For all the folks with cell phones. (This should be printed and kept in your car, purse, and wallet. Good information to have with you.)
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST
Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find Yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to Establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys In the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!'

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys * 3370#.Your cell phone will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phone next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone:*#06#.A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either.. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

Kunin Associates Does it Again

Kunin Associates just successfully placed a candidate for the second time, something not all that rare for us. In 2003 a client referred us to an experienced public accounting professional who was looking for a new challenging position. We met with the candidate and found him to be highly skilled. We presented his background to a select few large local accounting firms and he was well received. He participated in several interviews and an offer was extended and accepted and a successful match was made.
Over the past few years there has been continual contact between the placed candidate and Kunin Associates. Holiday wishes were exchanged, update calls were placed, referrals were suggested and the relationship continued to build as well as a career progressing.
Fast forward to present day and the current economy. Our candidate calls us and shares that the firm he is working for is making cuts due to restructuring and he is being laid off. He was having no luck on his own looking for a new position and wasn't certain what to do. We re-assured him that Kunin Associates had plenty of contacts and would do whatever we could to help. We suggested that he update his resume and send us a copy as soon as possible. Once we received the new resume one of our best recruiters reached out to a few of the top firms in the area.
As respected Professional Recruiters within the Accounting industry our clients encourage us to present outstanding candidates to them even when they have no immediate openings. We knew this candidate was highly talented and had a lot to offer a potential employer and there was substantial interest. In a short amount of time interviews were scheduled and the process continued from there. Within 6 weeks of being laid off our candidate had received an attractive offer from a well respected firm. "I am truly grateful for all that Kunin Associates has done for me and I highly recommend them." Stated our candidate in a recent call.
Kunin Associates is about creating long term relationships that continue through both good and challenging economies. We are there for you. Become a member of the Kunin Community and be comforted that you have a partner for every step of your career.

Retention, Keeping your Best Employees

As the economy improves, and more jobs become available, it is natural for employees to become curious about what other career opportunities are out there for them. This can cause concern for some employers. Retention thinking is something that should already be taking place in your organization, if not, here are some tips to start the process.

1) Allow your employees the opportunity to grow. Encourage continuing education, training seminars, webinars and cross training. Most employees are not looking for 'jobs' but 'careers'. By allowing employees to learn they will achieve personal growth and contribute more to the success of the company.
2) Treat all employees equally and fairly, if that is not possible due to extraneous circumstances, then make certain to give the perception of fairness. Once employees feel they are not being treated equally as compared to other workers they will begin the process of looking elsewhere for employment.
3) Managers and supervisors are critical to retention. Most employees leave their jobs due to poor managers and not because they dislike the company. It is important to properly train all managers to make certain they treat employees with the respect and fairness they deserve.
4) Make your work environment a happy place. Strive for a good work/life balance. There will always be times when employees will be expected to put in over time but balance that with time off for personal matters including kids sporting events, special holidays, and volunteering. The time off will be greatly appreciated and the company will be rewarded with increased retention.
5) Allow your employees to share their ideas freely with out the fear of repercussions. Allow for brainstorming sessions to take place where employees are encouraged to share their thoughts. There is no guarantee that all the ideas will be used but employees will feel they have input in the direction the company is headed. Also do not automatically kill a suggestion, discuss why it may or may not work.
6) Share information with your employees as it happens. This will avoid rumors from circulating that may cause some employees to leave prematurely. By being honest about a company's financial health and its plans for the future your employees will feel respected and be more willing to stay around.
7) Provide accurate job descriptions and reviews to all employees. This ensures everyone is on the same page and career growth is discussed. An accurate job description will also provide a measure for potential raises and promotions. If employees know how they are doing it increases their sense of security and lessens their chance for leaving.
8) Require senior managers to take the time to introduce themselves to all of their employees and find out their special skills and talents. Employees will feel valued when upper management takes a personal interest in them.

How To Conduct a Great Interview

Hiring and keeping good workers begins with the job interview. A successful interview does not just happen, it needs to be planned, guided and prepared for. If your interview skills are a bit rusty here are a few pointers to get you back in the game.
1) Review the resume before meeting face to face with a candidate. Take time to know something about the person before you meet them. Otherwise you may come across unprepared or disorganized.
2) Explain the process. Let the interviewee know how the interview will proceed. You may start with having the candidate discuss their background, then move to talking about the firm, to questions from either side to final comments. This will let the candidate know the agenda and keep you focused.
3) Prepare and write questions before the interview. This will make it easier to compare answers among candidates. Make sure to have a mix of questions that can give you insight into a person's work ethics, experience and career path.
4) Keep the interview moving and stick to the allotted time. If you get caught on a tangent then important issues make not get discussed.
5) If you are interviewing many people for the same position it is especially important to take notes. Along with taking notes, a simple grading system for set characteristics can be meaningful and quick to accomplish. You might create categories for knowledge level, experience and presentation and give grades such as A, A-, B+ etc.
6) Keep in mind the candidate is interviewing you and your firm at the same time. Coming across polished, knowledgeable and professional will make you successful in acquiring talented professionals

Happiness at Work, How to Make it Happen.

12 Quick Tips

Our recent challenging economic times have put a lot of strain on everyone and this affects our level of happiness. Being happy at work largely depends on how much you like what you do, but there are things you can do to boost your mood. Below are suggestions to help put a smile on your face and make your work life more enjoyable.
1. Brighten your office space. Everything around you affects your frame of mind. Place personal pictures and objects around you that remind you of fun times. Regularly organize the stacks of paper on your desk and get rid of what you don't need.
2. Check your physical environment. Is your office constantly too cold or too warm? Ask building maintenance to make adjustments. Do you have a chair that gives you proper back support? Look around and see if there are better chairs available for you, or bring in your own. Check your eyestrain. While looking at your computer put your hand to your forehead like a salute, if your eyes feel relieved your overhead lighting is too bright.
3. Think positive. Happiness is largely a choice. Concentrate on aspects of your work that you like and avoid negative people and gossip. Celebrate all the positive things happening within your office. Don't sweat the small stuff. When Julia Child dropped a cooking ingredient on the floor, she'd just pick it up and put it back in the pot without a second thought.
4. Take care of difficult calls or emails as quickly as possible. Procrastinating just makes it harder, getting them done gives you a boost of relieved energy.
5. Smile, sounds simple but it works. By putting a smile on your face you can change the mood of not only yourself but others around you. A smile can even be heard over the phone.
6. Do things differently. Boredom can become a problem for many at work. Switch things up a bit, move your desk, hold meetings in a different room at a different time, redesign the spreadsheets you use, make routine calls at a different time of the day.
7. Take charge of your own career growth. Don't wait to be noticed. Constantly be looking for ways to improve your skills or new projects to get involved in. This will allow you to meet more people and give you additional knowledge for your own job and also for advancement.
8. Movement. Get up and move around during the work day. Instead of phoning someone across the office get up and walk over to speak to them in person. Sitting too long in one position can make you sleepy and unmotivated. Take a mid-morning or mid-afternoon walk. Get the energy flowing. Avoid sugary treats that can cause you to crash.
9. Make only commitments you know that you can keep. If asked to do a difficult and lengthy project when your plate is already full, let your boss know. Create a plan to get everything done and don't be afraid to ask for assistance. If we promise to do everything and then get swamped it will lead to an increased stress level and unhappiness.
10. Be polite. Say "yes please", "thank you" and "you are welcome". Also give compliments to your coworkers on everything from a project well done, to closing a new deal, to how they look (But be appropriate.). "What goes around, comes around."
11. Take a break. It is important to take time away from the office. Taking a break provides an opportunity to reflect and it is often during such times when the best ideas emerge. Try to eat lunch at least one day a week away from the office. Take those days off, clear your head, come back refreshed and motivated for new projects.
12. Get to know your co-workers. Take a personal interest in their daily lives, ask how their family is, what hobbies or special interests they may have. Creating caring friendships at work makes our jobs more enjoyable.
If you have tried all of the above and nothing seems to work, it might be time to look for a new job. Contact Kunin Associates and let us help you find an opportunity that will make you happy and successful.

Below are questions to help you create the best job description to give to your recruiter, and thus leading you to the ideal candidate.

2. What are the essential duties and responsibilities? It's best to think about the job in its entirety. Some duties may only take place once a year but are still highly important.

5. What specific skills must a candidate bring to the role?
6. Are certain licenses or certificates required to do the position?
7. Does the position require overtime?
8. How much can the company afford to pay this person? Is there any leeway for the 'right' person? What are the benefits?
9. Is there a growth path for this position?
10. If this person is replacing a terminated employee, why did the previous person fail, and what skills were not there that were needed?
11. When will this person start?

How To Wrap Up an Interview

If starting an interview is awkward for many people, ending an interview can be even more difficult. Most interviews drag on too long (past the point where the interviewer needs more information in order to make a decision) because most interviewers don't know how to end the interview gracefully.
Some advice:
1. Set a time limit at the beginning. A half hour to 45 minutes should be sufficient for an initial screening . Have a clock visible, and let the candidate know at the start when the interview must come to an end.
2. Give clues to the candidate to suggest the interview is nearing its end. Some examples: if your using a pencil and paper put the pencil down and push the paper aside, look at your watch and refer to another appointment.
3. End on the appropriate note. What you should do at the end of the interview is mainly a matter of how good the candidate appears to you. If the candidate is someone you definitely wish to hire make sure the person knows you're actively interested. If the person is a "maybe," say that you're interested but want some time to think it over. If the person is a definite "no," be polite but noncommittal. "You have a fine record," you might say, "but I have other people to see. I'll let you know if we're interested."
As we all know time is money, if you keep your interviews moving along in a timely manner, you will remain on schedule and get more accomplished. For other issues concerning the best way to conduct an interview please contact Kunin Associates and one of our Professional Recruiters would be happy to help.

Effective Performance Reviews

Richard comes to you asking for a raise. You think to yourself, what has Richard been doing this past year? You remember the one project that you almost lost due to his mistake, but you also forgot the 2 deals he was crucial in closing. A properly planned out performance review will help you get through this situation.

The purpose of a performance review is to define a clear basis for wage increases, promotions, disciplinary action and other job related issues. By following these tips you will be able to deal with Richard's request for a raise.
· Develop a job description for each position within your firm and update it as a position evolves. Make certain each employee has a clear understanding of what is expected of him.
· Design a standard form for performance reviews that includes a rating system and place for comments. Always date it and make note of all people involved.
· Let the employee know in advance when their review will be in order that they may properly prepare.
· Maintain an employee log through out the year documenting all accomplishments, contributions and mishandled projects.
· Begin with the person's strengths and then tactfully move into any weaknesses. This will avoid the employee becoming defensive and should create a more open dialogue.
· The review should include specific and measurable goals with an action plan on how they can be accomplished.
· Encourage feedback from your employee and make it a two-way conversation.
· Be careful to keep your comments to observable behaviors and not personality traits.
· Conclude the review by summarizing what actions need to be made in the future and re-emphasizing your employee's strengths. End on a positive note.
Remember, Richard as well as your other employees, are your most valuable assets (and one of the most expensive). If they are treated fairly, respected and provided with proper feedback and reviews your efforts will be rewarded by having a successful business. If you need help in handling a performance review please give the professionals at Kunin Associates a call and we would be happy to provide assistance.

1) What do you see as the challenges of this position? 2) What are the responsibilities of this position, and which are the most important? 3)Are there any projects in motion for which I will inherit responsibility? What is their history and status? 4) What criteria will be used to evaluate my performance? 5) What accomplishments do you expect within the first year of performance? 6) How would you describe the company's personality and management style? 7) What are some of the company's long-term goals? 8) What is the company's mission statement? 9) What are the opportunities for growth? 10) Where would you place your priorities for the duties of this job?
